Long Island City is a residential and business neighborhood on the far western edge of Queens, a New York City borough. Astoria borders it to the North; to the east by Hazen Street, 49th Street, and New Calvary Cemetery in Sunnyside, to the west by the East River; and to the south by Newtown Creek, which divides Queens from Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Long Island City was established as a city in 1870. It was initially the center of administration for the Town of Newtown until becoming a City of Greater New York component in 1898.
