With 1,547,253 inhabitants in 2019, San Antonio is the seventh-most populated city in the country and the second-most populous city in Texas. In 1718, the city was founded as a Spanish mission and colonial stronghold, and in 1731, it became the first chartered civil town in present-day Texas.

San Antonio has a rich colonial history. The Alamo, a restored 18th-century Spanish mission, commemorates the historic 1836 battle for Texas's independence from Mexico. The River Walk is a mile-long pedestrian promenade that follows the San Antonio Riverand is packed with cafés and stores. Take a stroll or sail along the River Walk before visiting the Alamo and the city's ancient missions. The 750-foot-tall Tower of the Americas in HemisFair Park provides a panoramic view of the city. Try eating in the Pearl District or taking a cooking class to sample some of San Antonio's excellent food.

If you have time to go out of town, there's plenty to do, from caving and golfing to unleashing your inner cowboy in the neighboring Hill Country. Depending on the time of year, you may even be able to attend the city's renowned Fiesta.
