Richmond is the capital city of the United States Commonwealth of Virginia. It serves as the administrative headquarters for the Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and the Greater Richmond Region. During colonial times, it was a stronghold of independence. During the Civil War, it served as the Confederacy's capital, and it was the site of more than five years of combat as Confederate soldiers fought to protect it from Union conquest. When this occurred, the fleeing Confederate forces set fire to storehouses, igniting the fire that burned most of the antebellum city.

Today, numerous attractions in Richmond represent the Civil War story and the manner of life for which the South fought. Richmond also has several great American Revolutionary War sites (such as St. John's Church) and a large collection of Civil War artifacts.
