How to play ladder ball:
Setup
Place the ladders about 15 ft (4.6 m) apart. Each ladder has 3 rungs and are generally made from wood or PVC pipes. The best way to measure the gap between ladders is to set one up and walk about 5 paces and set the other onr up ensuring the rungs of each of them are in parallel.
Moving the ladders closer together can reduce the difficulty and increasing the distace can make it more difficult.
Each player or team must receive 3 bolas of their color, each bola is made of two golf balls attached together with string. With 2 players each player will take bolas of their color, and if you are playing in teams one player in each team will take all the bolas of your color.
A coing flip can decide who goes first. Whoever wins the coin flip goes first.
Alternative: You can take turn throwing all your bolas in a "shoot-out", where the side with the highest score will go first.
Gameplay
Stand on the side of the ladder behind the uprights (the vertical part of the ladder). If you play with 2 people, stand on opposite sides of the same ladder if its teams of 2 players then each player should stand on each side of their upright facing an opponent doing the same at their ladder. Ensure to keep your feet behind the uprights of the ladder when playing to avoid getting a penalty.
Throwing a bole across the uprights will not count towards your points total.
Throw 1 bola at a time at the opponent's ladder. Underhand tosses are recommended for throwing the bolas. You must aim for one of the rungs on the opponent's ladder and attempt to land your bolas on it. After you throw all 3 of your bolas and let the other player throw all their bolas at the same ladder.
Bouncing bolas off the ground to land on the rungs are permitted.
During team play only one player is allowed to throw bolas at one time. If you are not playing that round, stand back from the ladder to ensure you aren't accidently hit by a bola.
Alternative: Switch between you and the other player after each throw to add some excitement to the game.
Each bola hanging from a ladder rung adds up to the score. After both players toss all their bolas, count the number of your bolas on each rung. The scoring works as follows, each bola is worth 3 points on the top rung, 2 points on the middle rung, and 1 point on the bottom rung. Any bolas missed or have fallen off the ladder count to no points. The total of the points is the score for each player or team
The player that gets the most points get the first turn in the next round. If the game is between two players the switch sides after each round. If you’re playing in teams, your teammate will throw bolas for the next round.
The players must not go over 21 points, going over 21 points in a round will lead to the score being ignored for that round and the players must try in the next rounds. If you land exactly 21 points on the rung you will win by default!
If both players or teams earn 21 points on the same round, then continue playing overtime rounds until 1 player or team is ahead by 2 or more points.
Strategy
It is okay to distract the opponent by making sounds and gestures as long as you don't get in the way of their throw or touch them or their bola.
If you get your bolas all on the same rung or three separate rungs and your opponent does not land any on the same rungs you get 1 extra point. When the point is for landing everything on the same rung it is called a "hat trick" and if its a point for landing on three separate rungs it is called a "birdie".
The most you can earn is 10 points given you get all 3 of your bolas on the top rung.
You can knock opponents bolas off the rungs to make them lose points. BEware if your bola falls off too you get no points!
