Freight by Water? Why Not?

New York City’s Blue Highways Initiative is a marine freight pilot program designed to increase the use of the City’s waterways for the movement of freight traffic. This plan might lead to improved infrastructure at marine terminals or other waterfront properties as well as a reduction in the number of polluting, dangerous trucks moving through the City’s dense urban neighborhoods. 

While the City released a Request for Information and Expressions of Interest (RFEI) for this initiative in the fall of 2023, innovators connected to the Brooklyn waterfront have long been thinking about, advocating for, planning for, and actually moving freight by water.  Join us for a Breakfast Talk on April 12 to hear a panel of innovators and thinkers discuss their visions for and experience of moving freight by water. While not being done at the scale envisioned by the City, these efforts reveal a thirst and enthusiasm for using New York’s waterways to lessen the burden of trucks on its roadways and to decrease the emissions as new forms of commerce proliferate with a concomitant increase in road traffic and its associated social, environmental, safety, and health issues.
